Remembering "Champ"
Veterinarian promotes holistic options

HOPKINTON -- "Champ," veterinarian Margo Roman’s beloved horse for more than 16 years, was laid to rest Friday after a long battle with cancer.

Roman’s family and neighbors gathered with flowers at the Winter Street barn where the aging horse spent his final hours. They watched while a backhoe dug a large grave in the nearby field where he used to run.

Before Champ was euthanized with painkillers, he nuzzled his mourners and clearly enjoyed being the center of attention. While lightning was raging outside the barn during his final minutes, the skies cleared just after he collapsed and died peacefully.

According to his devoted owner, Champ could have been dead 2 1/2 years ago. He was suffering from cancer and needed an eye removed, and Tufts University’s veterinary school in North Grafton insisted Roman put him down then. Roman refused and said she kept Champ alive and happy through herbal medicines and other holistic therapies.

Champ’s long life -- he died at 27, an advanced age for a horse -- and his peaceful death have inspired Roman to raise awareness of the alternative therapies available for pets. She is putting together a Web site and several films aimed at pet owners, based on her research and a recent trip to China to research herbs and acupuncture.
